I’m not happy all the time. No, really – it’s true. But when I am a bit pissed off, for whatever reason, I tend to find a quick visit to YouTube can put me back on track. So, I thought I should share some of my favourites – maybe they’ll help you out in a fix too.
I can see this being something I’ll revisit, as these five really are the tip of the iceberg. That said, these five came really quickly to mind so I’m not sure I’ll come up with a better overall selection. Maybe I can do themes in future. Hmm…
Anyway, as the title suggests, these videos pick me right up. But I don’t own any of these on CD (although I’m pretty sure I’ve got the Intaferon track on vinyl), nor MP3 – with the exception of ‘Get out of London’ I love these things for the combination of words, music and pictures. Hopefully you’ll get a kick out of them too.
Make Out – ‘You can’t be friends with everyone’
I came across this completely by accident, while reading Mike Doughty’s thoroughly entertaining blog. Cathartic, noisy, short, funny: a great throwaway pop song with an equally great video. Not much else to say really – enjoy!
Baptazia, featuring Pendulum – ‘Another Planet’
If I’m ever a bit pissed off, a quick YouTube search for ‘baptazia’ always brings me back. I can’t quite describe the joy these videos give me. This is my favourite, as I happen to love the track too and the, “This one’s a stinker” line at the start gets me every time.
Peelander Z – ‘S.T.E.A.K.’
Seeing these guys live at CBGB was one of the real gigging highlights of my life. While I prefer the video to ‘Mad Tiger’ and possibly enjoy ‘So many Mike’ just as much as this one, there could only be one winner – this is it.
Intaferon – ‘Get out of London’
One of my old friends (hello Brian! Not that he’ll ever read this) discovered this when we were at high school. For some reason it wasn’t a hit, but I was overjoyed when I found it on YouTube a few months back, especially in such high quality. I can’t believe I still know all the words.
Jon LaJoie – ‘Everyday normal guy’
It’s not easy to make a novelty song that doesn’t suck, let alone a video to go with it that doesn’t blow. There’s a few bum notes here, but overall it’s a classic that doesn’t seem to have aged at all. Deserves to be on the list for, “You want some of this, bitch?” Genius.
